YouTube Live Thumbnail — Grab a Live Stream's Cover Image
Live covers, current streams and ended broadcasts — what actually exists.
Quick answer: A live stream's cover is stored exactly like any other video's — same URL ladder, same rules — so paste the live link and this page fetches the largest cover that exists. Streams that never had custom artwork fall back to a frame from the broadcast; ended streams keep their cover, so the link you saved still works months later.
Nothing fetched yet. Paste a link above — the page reads only the public cover images and the video's public metadata, and it never touches the video file itself.
| During the stream | Cover serves normally; Max HD depends on the creator's artwork |
|---|---|
| After it ends | The same URLs keep working — the cover is not deleted with the stream |
| Link forms | /live/«id», watch?v=«id», youtu.be/«id» all resolve to the same video |
| Not included | Live chat captures, stream recordings or audio |
What this tool does
Live thumbnails cause confusion because the same broadcast can be reached through two different URL shapes — a /live/ path while airing and a watch page afterwards — and viewers assume the cover changes with it. It does not: both forms point at one video ID, and the thumbnail ladder is identical.
Common uses
- Save the cover art of a livestream you are writing about
- Download a premiere's poster for an event recap
- Check what artwork a channel uses for its regular streams
- Recover a cover after a stream link was rotated
